What Causes Cough With Mucus?

Hi doctor, I have had a cough for months now. It has gotten worse within the most recent month and a few weeks ago i had a really bad virus with a 104 fever. The cough was really bad but the doctors just associated it with the virus. Now, I still have the cough. It is very mucus-y. After some time, it gathers in my throat and becomes so thick that I can t breath so I have the cough just so i can breathe again. It also gets a little worse at night but not much. Any idea what this could be? When i went in for the virus a few weeks ago they checked my breathing and said my lungs sounded clear. however, this cough has gone on for so long and I cough so frequently I feel like i am starting to annoy the people around me. I also thought i might mention that recently the mucus/cough has started to taste bad. Sort of like a chlorine/bleach taste. Any idea? Thanks

Pulmonologist 's  Response
You need to be evaluated with a chest x ray and phlegm culture. Though details like age , gender, exact duration of illness would be helpful. Consult a pulmonologist for the same.
