What Causes Constipation Post Quadruple Bypass Surgery?

My father recently had a quadruple bypass and stents put in for aneurisms. He is taking a number of different medications including opiates for his pain. Currently, he is extremely constipated and hasn t had a bowel movement for well over a week now. All methods such as, laxatives, stool softeners, and suppositories showed no results or solutions. What else aside from enemas should he try?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thank you for the question and welcome to healthcaremagic!

I have read your query and understand your concern.
To help you more I would need to know when was his operation done? For how long has he taken each method for constipation management with no result. Is he ambulatory? Any complaints of abdomen swelling and pain?

If it has been a recent surgery about 1-2 week then it's advisable to get him examined by a local doctor to rule out any intestinal obstruction.

If you have tried all mentioned methods for constipation management and intestinal obstruction has been ruled out, only remaining method is enema and if this is not successful then manual stool extraction by a local surgeon needs to be done.

Constipation is a lifestyle disorder and thus along with medicine, he will also have to maintain some exercise as advised , weight loss if overweight and diet more in fiber and liquid.

Let me know if any further questions, takecare!
