What Causes Constipation After Inguinal Hernia Repair?

I had two Inguinal hernias repaired about 12 days ago and have been battling constipation since. I ve been taking an off the self stool softener to try and help. After a misunderstanding over my Percocet prescription I took 1 5/325 every two hours over the period of about 4 days right after the surgery causing insomnia and even worse constipation. I ve cut my usage of all pain killers outside of ibuprofen 200mg tablets x3 once or twice a day for a few days. Getting to my concern I just had a bowel movement that was bright red. I ve been returning to a sort of normal movement routine over the last few days and none of them had any blood in them. My follow up appointment with the surgeon is in two days. Should I wait to see if it happens again and talk to him on tuesday or should I seek medical attention sooner?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If the bleeding repeats itself or constipation worsens then you should be seen.

It is possible that the as the percocet leaves your system that constipation would resolve. In addition to the use of a stool softener, you should use fluids and fiber.

Even if the bleeding in the stool does not repeat itself, you should mention it to your surgeon when you see him.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
