What Causes Constant Sinus Drainage And Enlarged Upper Throat Lymph Nodes?

Hi Dr. Bhatti, I had unknown roof damage and have been sleeping in a mold infested bedroom for 2 yrs. I was waking up in the middle of the night after lying prone for 3 to 4 hours to a clicking-popping sound in my upper sinuses. I have no problem breathing but my sinus cavities under my eyes make whistling and popping sounds (like Rice Crispies) that actually wakes me up. I have constant sinus drainage and my upper throat lymph nodes are slightly enlarged. My blood work for the mold panel came back negative. And the clicking noises have stopped since I moved out the mold infested bedroom. My doctor wants me to get a CT scan of my sinuses but I do not want to do this if it is not necessary. Should I be examined by an ENT? I cannot recreate the issue because it only happens after I have been laying down for several hours. Thank you, Anne

Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Fungal sinusitis has a wide range of presentation from allergy when the fungus is only in contact with the nasal and sinus mucosa (inner lining) to the most severe invasive sinusitis.

2. In your case it is possible that this is a form of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis where the sinus is outside the body but causes an allergic reaction.

3. You should see an ENT Specialist.

4. If you want to avoid a Sinus CT Scan at present, you may take a trial with medications including anti-allergic, mucolytic, nasal steroid sprays, nasal washes and steam inhalation.

5. If medication and change in the room helps, you may continue the medication and then taper it off. If the symptoms persist, get the plain Sinus CT done as it is the gold standard imaging for sinuses. It is not possible to look inside the sinuses even with endoscopes.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
