What Causes Constant Flank Pain Along With Rectal Bleeding?

I have had painful left flank pain for over a year . It is noticeable only with ambulation - not present when I am not moving. I have few other symptoms with possibly the exception of occasional minor rectal bleeding ( uncertain if this is even related). If I touch the area of tenderness it seems to be in soft tissue at about waist level but in my flank area only - and fairly close to my spine. It extends anteriorly about 3-4 inches and laterally from my spine maybe 2.5-3 inches. It definitely impedes my ability to walk any distance - unless I use a shopping cart or a walker to support my upper body in standing straight - and then it hurts less, also. : otherwise I have to lean my upper body forward from the waist to try and reduce the constant burning pain. Even leaning forward to write this email, I am aware of the area of tenderness although It isn t a true pain until I decide to walk. Topical applications of Heat are helpful in reducing the pain and NSAIDs are not particularly effective. I ve tried bedrest, clear liquids, a high fiber diet and even short term antibiotics but none of them reduced the fairly loculated discomfort. Stool samples have been unremarkable with a slight heme positive reading though nothing impressive. Afebrile, urine is clear, no blood, although I do notice increased frequency and occasional inability to control it from overflowing on my peri pad - which could just be due to my age. I am 60, non smoker, non drinker.active but overweight. I take synthroid and hydroclorthiazide 25 mg each morning. Any thoughts ? Please give me more than you should see a doctor because I already realise this. I m particularly interested in suggestions for home management techniques to try and heal myself, if possible ? Thank you for any help.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have constant flank pain along with rectal bleeding . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like arthritis , disk disease , pinched nerve in the back , muscle spasm , kidney infection , kidney stones , pancreatitis and inflammatory illnesses of the bowel . Rectal bleeding can occur due to piles , anal fissure or ulcers .I would suggest you to consult general practitioner for proper examination . Doctor will take history , see that in which direction pain is going , order kidney function test , blood test and ultrasound . Doctor may refer you to nephrologist for kidney problem or orthopedic surgeon for nerve muscle and disc problem . Doctor may also refer you to gastroenterologist if there will be condition related to gastric problem . For now apply warm compresses on back and upper abdomen and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
