What Causes Cold Sensation On The Legs And Calves?

Hi. Can you please tell me what it means to have a cold sensation in my legs, the tops of my calf muscles behind my knees?? I keep thinking my legs are wet, but I m laying in bed and am not sweating. My left leg is worse than the right. It s very strange and I just want to know why it s happening. It just started a week ago. I struggle with what I like to think is restless legs syndrome (because I don t sleep well since every time I start to fall asleep, I cannot get comfortable because of the urges to move that I experience, mostly in my hips. And now the sensation has spread to my arms.) I think I know what those feelings are but am not sure about this whole ice water running down my legs thing. I ll be seeing a doctor in a week but that will be for depression and anxiety. What is going on with me?? And what do I tell my doctor?? Please, help.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic issues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetics or injury of spine nerves.

If this is not your case then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form.

You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medications or by surgical and radiological procedures.

Also, you should have Aspirin and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks.

In most cases, it can be managed with medications but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
