What causes cold and chest congestion?

Hi. I am having the following symptoms: runny & stuffy nose that burns and is quite red. I have head and chest congestion both. This started a week ago in my chest as a dry cough that now has created quite a cough with some mucous. It is now moved up to my head as well so have plugged ears and just feel really tired. Is this all allergy related or is it a cold? Either way I need to work. Took off sick today to rest. What do you recommend I take to feel better?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on the description, it appears that you could be having infection of the upper respiratory tract.
Kindly do the following to overcome the symptoms.
1. Do salt water gargling twice daily.
2. Take a course of oral antibiotics like Azithromycin once a day for 3 days.
3. Use medicated lozenges for throat soothening.
4. Take steam inhalation regularly, which will help to keep the sinus and air passages open.
5. Take decongestant medication in the form of syrup which contains chlorpheniramine maleate, phenylephrine, menthol and guaifenesin.
6. Avoid consumption of cold items like cool drinks and ice-creams.
Gradually, you should be able to overcome such problems.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best and wish you good health.
Regards,
Dr.Ashakiran.S.
