What Causes Clogged Ears?

My left ear has been clogged shut since April. CT and MRI show no abnormalities. Last month ear finally opened a few times. First time lasted barely a minute. Second time lasted a few hours. And third time lasted 2 days. Now it has been clogged shut for over a week again. While ear is clogged I hear the sound of silence very high pitched. Right before it opens, I hear very loud crackling noises. Hearing test done last month showed nerve damage and deafness. How is this possible if ear opened a few times afterwards, and I could hear perfectly? And why is ear constantly feeling full/ clogged ?

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of clogged ears which is due to ear infection, wax buildup, Eustachian tube dysfunction and foreign body penetration in ear.

Need not to worry about it. I would suggest you to visit Otolaryngologist/ENT specialist once and get it evaluated and start treatment after proper examination. Apply warm compresses on ear and avoid excessive bending forward. You should take antibiotic Ciprofloxacin along with Ibuprofen. You should put Otogesic ear drops 2-3 times a day. Get all the lab tests done and complete examination with otoscope. You should take proper rest. Try to avoid pricking it with any sharp object. You should avoid sleeping on this side.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
