What Causes Chronic Productive Cough With Phlem And Chest Pain?

male, age 47, height 5-8, weight 158. non smoker, non drinker - quit 20 years ago. On no medications. Take a one a day, fish oil, condroitin and D3 - daily. Active runner. Have chronic productive cough with white/yellowish phlem for one year. Pain in chest on upper left side - hurts when coughing, breathing deep, twisting, laying down(last 3 months). Went to doctor one month ago. Have had x rays, ct, also neuclear stress test and echo - all normal. go in for follow up with internist next week. Any ideas?

I can understand your concern.
No need to worry for major heart diseases as your stress test is normal.
Sometimes, bronchitis (inflammation of airways) cancer also cause similar symptoms like cough, expectoration, chest pain etc.
And bronchitis can not be diagnosed on chest x ray and CT scan. PFT (pulmonary function test) is needed for confirmation of bronchitis.
So consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system and PFT (pulmonary function test).
PFT will not only diagnose bronchitis but it will also tell you about severity of the disease. And treatment of bronchitis is based on severity only.
You may need inhaled bronchodilator and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on the basis of PFT.
Don't worry, you will be alright. First diagnose yourself and then start appropriate treatment.
