What causes chronic pain in wrist in spite of surgery for carpel tunnel

I have had intermitent pain in my wrist, hand and going up into my elbow and shoulder for about 8 years now. Doctors have said it will be due to Carpel Tunnel (had both wrists operated on about 15 years ago) but I m not convinced. The pain is worse when I stop for rest during horse riding lessons and also when I walk about for a while or drive a car. I have seen an osteopath in the past but she couldnt find anything going on. Should I just learn to live with it? I am female, 41 years old.

Hi,

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome might be due to diabetes, thyroid disorders, fractures or trauma to the wrist etc. History states you already had undergone surgery for carpal tunnel. But in few cases even after carpal tunnel release surgery, symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling sensation are seen due to the long-standing carpal tunnel syndrome you had before surgery. So pain shows there is more compression and significant nerve damage.

I advise you to:
- Keep your hand in a resting position by short splint
- Take analgesics & give cold compress
- Inj. Hydrocortisone locally into the carpel tunnel to alleviate the symptoms

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
