What Causes Chronic Constipation And Heartburn?

Hi, I have been working with a couple of doctor off and on for years now when I could afford it for this problem.

I am a 53 year old male, not over weight (a little beer belly but not bad). I am in pretty good shape and work out for about an hour at the gym 5 days a week. I feel pretty good and am healthy except for this problem. Blood pressure is good. Seasonal alergies.

I have been experiencing intestinal discomfort/burning for years. makes me feel like I need to eat but eating increases the discomfort/ burning. I have had an colenostapy, endoscope of my stomach, upper GI fluoroscopy, ultrasound of my galblader and the test for how much my galblader puts out. I also suffer from cronic erregularity and constipation. Also I neve thought to mention it tell my doctor but my stool tends to be a kind of tanish greyish color, could that be of importace. Also when I drink alcoholic beverages it can cause some siriouse pain some times. When I can afford to go back to the doctor I will mention this to him.

It makes it hard don't have much money and can only work on this when I can afford it.

Do you have any thoughts about this problem. Any sugestions for information that I might want to have for him when I am able to see him again?

Thanks,

Tom M

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms are nonspecific, but these may be suggestive of gastritis, GERD or hiatal hernia so you should do gastroscopy to evaluate it more accurately. This is caused by irritation of stomach mucosa by certain food or medications, stress and smoking. It should be treated by changing lifestyle habits first and in severe cases medications or surgery may be required.

You need to eat smaller meals but or frequently , avoid long sitting after meal and regulate your body mass. You need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol and spicy food. You should eat more milk products, vegetables and boiled food. Also, certain anti-acid medications may be required by diagnosis should be established first.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
