What Causes Choking Sensation While Suffering From A Hiatal Hernia?

I have a hiatal hernia and everything that goes with it . On occasion it feels like my throat closes and I start choking and can't get any air. People around me assume I am choking on food. It happens "instantly". Usually if I can get a drink of water to go down then my throat will open back up. Lately that isn't working. The attacks are lasting longer. Had a bad one today, couldn't speak right afterward because I couldn't get enough air.... I choke to the point of throwing up.... can the hiatal hernia cause this?

Hello,
Thank You for the query at HealthcareMagic

Choking sensation you are experiencing is possibly due to GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). Hiatal hernia makes the acid in stomach to reflux back up the esophagus more easily resulting in GERD.
Here are few things you can try to help alleviate the symptom
-Avoid fried, fatty, spicy food, chocolate and citrus fruits, tomatoes etc
-Limit coffee intake
-Avoid caffeinated carbonated drinks
-Eat small frequent meals
-Avoid smoking, limit alcohol intake
-Do not go to bed on full stomach. Give atleast 2 hours between bed time and dinner
-Raise the head end of your bed using wood blocks underneath bed post
-Weight loss if needed
-Take omeprazole 20 mg every day in the morning half an hour before breakfast

If symptoms persist after trying the above mentioned measures , follow up with your doctor for evaluation of Hiatal hernia and need for surgery .

Hope I was able to help you
Please address any more concerns
Regards,
Dr.Lekshmi
