What Causes Chest Spasms And Breathing Problems?

I had bladder surgery on Tuesday. I am a 44 year old female weighing 250 pounds, am confined to a wheelchair and my ms has been spiralling downward throughout the summer. After surgery, when the anesthesiologist removed the breathing tube, I began having severe chest spasms and breathing problems. He said that if he could not get them under control, they would have to keep me in the hospital. They were able to give me muscle relaxers and valium by IV which worked, after giving me pills which did not work. Early this afternoon, I began wheezing, and it has gradually gotten worse. What could be going on?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per the description the breathing difficulty is in relation with residual bronchitis changes. My recommendations, at present, are:
- Inhale vapors of boiled water with added tincture benzoin 3 times a day.
- Do regular walk in fresh air, deep breathing exercises, and YOGA, which will prove vital recovering agents.
- Prefer semi-reclining position.
- Avoid passive or active smoking.
- Avoid exposure to dust or pollens.
Consult your doctor as per the requirements.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
