What Causes Chest Pain While Having Hiatal Hernia?

Hi Dr. Rynne, I am an RN who recently had a bout of some serious chest pain. EKG sinus brady, no ectopy. Troponin levels 0. Stress test aborted because bp fell 69/38. Scheduled for a Lexiscan on 18th. Chest x ray did show a hiatal hernia. Could the hiatal hernia cause chest pain of 10 relieved by nitro or is this cardiac?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

Of course it can, along with chest pain, heartburn is also commonly seen and should subside once treatment for hiatus hernia is initiated. Management using H-2 receptor blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and antacids are usually helpful to most patients. Who do not benefit from medications are recommended surgical correction, please speak to your doctor about the same.

Best wishes.
