What Causes Burning Sensation On Left Hand Side Of Stomach?

Burning/discomfort sensation on left hand side of stomach for over two years. All tests done have revealed nothing except a minor irritation (from endoscopy). Took nystatin for a few months w/very minor relief. Also taken aciphex - helps a bit from time to time. Had H. pylori it was treated and cured. Seen a number of GIs and the only thing they can suggested at this time is to take nortriptylline to reduce the signals to the brain - something that supposedly works in some people. I am really apprehensive of trying this drug b/c of the side effects. Any suggestions of some test that is being overlooked (as far fetched as it may be)?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
BUrning or discomfort on the left side of the stomach for such a long period can be due to the gastritis, or due to any nerve compression in the thoracic spine.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Repeat endoscopy as one may get an additional signs.
Since you have already been treated for H pylori, with Nystatin, Aciphex and so on, the cause may be hidden in the spine.
Hence I would advise you for MRI of the thoracic spine and get the correct diagnosis.
Also get a CT scan of the abdomen and colonoscopy as you have not mentioned the exact area on the left side.
Since you have been prescribed Nortriptyline, there must be a reason and believe me it does not have much of such side effects ans you might have seen on internet.
You can take these safely. Start taking this and you may have a bit of sleepiness for the first few days.
If there is any problem with the investigations, get treated accordingly and if all the investigations are normal one can think of an IBS, that is irritable bowel syndrome and get treated accordingly.
