What Causes Burning Sensation In The Lips After Taking Potassium Citrate?

My husband takes Potassium Citrate 2 pills twice a day. Was off meds this med 2 weeks before a 24 hour urine collection. Started back on pills 5 days ago (only change in meds, no change in diet). Since restarting K+ Onset of extreme burning & soreness inside lips, mouth mucosa, & tongue (similar to scalding coffee, etc). Appears redder than normal, no blisters but difficult to eat. Only other change is a replacement tooth retainer for dental implants.

Burning sensation inside mouth, inner lips and mouth mucosa is called Stomatitis and Potassium Citrate is seen to cause it as a side effect, although the frequency of patient experiencing it is very rare..

But as it is a listed side effect of Potassium Citrate, he should consult him Physician and get evaluated, so that he can check the dose and titrate it accordingly or advise any alternate salt combination to reduce the side effects..

For now to relieve the symptoms he can gargle with Lidocaine containing mouthwash or suck Cepacol lozenges as they have numbing action and will help in reducing the discomfort while eating..
Also sucking ice or doing cold water rinses can help in reducing inflammation..
He can take soft and bland foods and more of liquids to ease in intake and will not get deprived of nutrition..
