What Causes Burning And Tingling Sensation On The Soles Of The Feet?

I know that I have a heel spur in my left foot and arthritis on the top of my right foot which was diagnosed about 5 years ago. It only bothered me occasionally but now the pain is constant in both feet and I have burning, and needle and pins feeling on the bottom of my feet and up my ankles. When I m off my feet the pain eventually subsides, but when I get up again I can barely walk for a few minutes.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The burning and pins and needles imply that the nerves may be involved. This can be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes.

Some of the more common causes are:

(1) Trauma to the nerves, the nerves in the feet come from the lower spine and arthritis of the spine can affect them
(2) Diabetes
(3) Liver or kidney disease
(4) Side effect of medication
(5) Low levels of vitamin B12 or Folate
(6) Thyroid disease
(7) Infection such as shingles
(8 ) Exposure to toxins
(9)Autoimmune diseases such as shingles or RA

Imaging of the back and feet maybe needed as well as blood tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
