What causes burning and stinging in the nostrils?

I have just returned home after having septoplasty/rhinoplasty surgery. I am a 49 year old woman weighing 158 lbs in excellent health with no pre-surgery complications. My situation is that immediately upon awaking in the recovery area, I experienced burning and stinging in my nostrils, sore throat and pain in the chest. The sore throat and chest pain are the result of the breathing tube (it was a 4 hour surgery) and I was told by the nurse on duty that the nasal burning was due to the nasal sprays that were administered while I was under anesthesia. My question is, how long will it be before this burning subsides? This is actually the worst part of my experience thus far. I did have nasal packing performed which is being removed in two days - could the burning be related to this? I am currently taking Percocet for pain which is working well for the actual pain of the rhinoplasty, but it hardly touches the burning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Immediately after rhinoplasty every patient feels this burning sensation. So it is neither unusual nor a surgical failure, don't worry. Yes your nasal pack also contributes to some of the burning but not all. It takes 1 week to 2 weeks for the burning sensation to subside entirely. After your nasal packing is removed you can use Mucopain gel or normal saline nasal spray to ease your burning.

Hope I have answered your query.
