What Causes Brownish Vaginal Discharge After Using Mirena IUD?

I have been on the Mirena coming up on five years in April. For the past week or so I have been having a brown discharge and when I wipe after using the bathroom I ve been noticing tissue like particles on the tissues. Is that normal or should I be making a doctor s appointment. I don t know what to think.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Experiencing brownish discharge with tissue like particles while on IUD needs to be evaluated. It could be caused due to local inflammation due to reaction of the mucosa and tissues. However, if the inflammation is abnormal, probably its removal needs to be considered.
Hence, kindly consult Gynecologist for per-speculum examination to know what could be the cause, so that appropriate measures can be taken accordingly. Also, a vaginal secretion swab may be taken and sent for laboratory analysis to confirm the cause for it.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
