What Causes Brownish Tinge To Semen?

Hi - I m actually wondering about the color of my husbands semen. It is a light brown in color, instead of the usually white or clear. Is that anything to worry. He thinks it because it s old. But I ve never heard of such a thing. My email address is: YYYY@YYYY .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thank you for the question.
Brownish semen can be caused by infections, especially in the prostate, and also due to bleeding in the prostate because of its fragile veins. When the prostate contracts at the time of ejaculation, a vein may tear and blood mixes with the semen. Red blood indicates new and dark (brownish) discoloration indicates previous bleeding.
Also, infection of the gland of prostate, called prostatitis can cause it to become inflamed and predisposed to bleed.
I would suggest to take an exam semen culture for possible infection.
Best regards!
