What Causes Brown Vomiting After Excess Alcohol Intake?

My 45 year old younger brother was been an alcoholic for 20+ years, mainly drinking very large amounts of 3.2 beer..... He has gone to AA, been to psych hospital for detox, or just tries to self detox, ........but today I went to check on him......within a week it looks like he has consumed 25 to 30 of these beers a day. Well, I noticed he kept spitting like he was about to throw up, this went on for quite a while, and then he threw up TONS of dark brown liquid!!! I told him that I would take him to the hospital if he needed me to. He said he hasn t really had much food to eat in the past week. What does the dark brown vomit mean?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern for your younger brother.
It is a pity that he has taken such a large quantity of alcohol. He is vomiting out dark brown liquid means that he must be having severe erosive gastritis and bleeding in the stomach. Alcohol causes acute gastritis by injuring the gastric mucosa.
He needs to be evaluated at the earliest by admission to the hospital by getting an upper GI endoscopy done. Since he has not taken much food recently, he needs nutrition via parenteral route (I.V. fluids).
Then depending on its findings, he can be treated by administration of proper medications.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
