Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Dark vaginal discharge occurs when a little bit of old blood mixes with the normal discharge. The reason why the blood is brown is because of its age. As blood moves through the body, it ages and begins to dry. There are various causes which are associated with brown vaginal discharge. They are as follows: 1. Ovulation: Sometimes, the process of ovulation may be accompanied with little bleeding. This blood mixes in with your normal vaginal mucus, and hence, your discharge might be a little or even a dark brown. 2. Endometrial tissue: The discharge could be just an old tissue that had not passed out during the last period. This tissue may remain in the uterus for quite a while before it passes, and the discharge appears brown in colour. 3. Perimenopause: Brown discharge could be sometimes be seen just before menopause. 4. Birth control pills: Contraceptive pills can sometimes cause irregular periods and spotting with brown discharge. 5. Miscarriage: Some women might see dark brown blood or discharge during the early stages of a miscarriage. 6. Disease: Certain diseases which are associated with brown discharge include bacterial vaginosis, PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), cervical cancer and few sexually transmitted diseases.
