What Causes Breathing Difficulty?

I am a 68-year-old female, sedentary working on the computer during the day. I participated in a 5k last Saturday. Normally walk it in an hour. This time near the 1.5 mile I was having difficulty breathing. I took a ride from race support back to the gathering area. Quickly felt better. I weigh 195 lbs. Just wondering what a good next step should be. No heart disease in our family.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
The breathlessness while participating in 5 k race could be-
- Just due to physical/ psychological stress of walking & winning.
- But looking at the age, I would think possibility of Anemia & weakness/COPD.. where there is wheezing along with breathlessness/ heart problem( though not in family , needs to be excluded).
* You should therefore go for general health check up by your family physician along with investigations suggested by him to pin point the cause followed by treatment or referral for expert consultation ( heart or chest specialist )
Thanks.
