What Causes Bloody Mucus Stools?

Hello. I am a 33yr old female. I started having bloody, mucus stools, and abd pain back in Sept. I was going to the bathroom about 6-8 times a day, most of the time with no stool, just blood and mucus. I had a sigmoidoscopy back in October and was told to take Colozal 3 times a day for 8 wks and I should be fine. It made me better for the first 2 wks, then the symptoms started again, blood/mucus in stool and now pain to upper lt part of abdomen. I have constant gurgling sounds from my abd that you can hear from across the room and lots of nausea. My appetite has not changed and I have not had any weight loss. I am tired most of the time and now experiencing some palpatations, dizziness, and sleep disturbance due to feeling like my heart is pounding. I am so confused as to what to do next. Can anyone help?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Since sigmoidoscopy was already done. You should have posted the report for me to assist you better. Blood with mucus in stool indicates that there is some colitis and the only biopsy can tell us the proper diagnosis which is very important for proper therapy. Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
-Continue Colozal and other medications till you get another set of investigations including colonoscopy and biopsy.
-Also need a proper test of blood for CBC, thyroid, liver and kidney functions, tumor markers.
-Tests of stool for three consecutive days.
-Contrast-enhanced CT scan.
-Take probiotics and other medications as may be needed.
-Avoid all the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the symptoms and stop all these altogether. Further management will be as per the final diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
