What Causes Blood-tinged Vomitus And Severe Diarrhea?

My grand daughter woke 3am morning before last vomiting in her sleep. Did it again an hour later and did a massive diarrhoea poo that over filled her nappy. It smelt like sewerage. She had another runny poo then nothing more after that until this morning she vomited and this time has blood clots. What could this be from?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on your description, she likely has an infection of the gastrointestinal tract. This can be viral or bacterial but the presence of blood means that she should be seen by her doctor for assessment. These infections are most commonly hand to mouth, this means contact with a contaminated area with the hands, hands to food, food to the mouth.

It can occur as a result of using food that was contaminated other wise. In the majority treatment involves:

(1) Holding off solid foods till there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms,

(2) Fluids to prevent dehydration (that is pedialyte or gatorade). These are initially given in very small amounts, that is 1 tsp to 1 tbsp every 5 mins for the first hour. It is increased if tolerated.

(3) And probiotics but as mentioned, because blood is seen, she should be evaluated by a doctor.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
