What Causes Blood Oozing From The Ear?

I was cleaning my ear with a q tip and turned around and bumped into the door jamb. It drove the q-tip into my ear and hurt a lot. Now there is a small amount of blood if I check with a q-tip but I have no hearing changes and I didn't hear a pop. Could there be blood from something other than a ruptured ear drum?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that bumping into the door while cleaning the ear with a q-tip and bleeding can be due to 2 reasons:

1. You injured the mucosa of the ear canal with the q-tip leading to bleeding and pain..
In this case you need not to worry as it will get resolved on its own and is not serious..
If there is pain taking Ibuprofen or tylenol can relieve..

2.But in case if due to getting too deep inside the ear with the q-tip there has been perforation of the ear, then you need to get it treated to prevent progression of damage and causing hearing loss..

I would therefore suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like otoscopy can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

In case if there is a small perforation a course of antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkillers and decongestant nasal sprays will help..

In case if there is a large perforation surgical correction via Tympanoplasty procedure can help..

You should also avoid exposue to loud sounds, limit water exposure to ears and also avoid picking the ear again and again as if you accidentally go deeper again it can lead to further injury..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
