What Causes Blood In Urine With History Of Kidney Stones?

my 26 year old daughter was diagnosed with a kidney stone 4 weeks ago.Just before Christmas she went in to have the stone removed. The stone that was determined to be about 5 cm had grown to 7 cm. The Dr put in a stint and went to remove the stone But decided it was to high and stopped the procedure. Told her to come back next week .They left the stint in place.went back yesterday and could not find the stone .Assumed it has passed. Today she found herself going to the clinic because she was in severe pain. Her urine is very dark.Obvisously blood. She went to the hospital ,the did a cat scan found a 3cm stone. And she was told she had a unrinary infection.Gave her script for antibiotics and nausea. My concern and hers is the amount of bleeding. Should we be getting a second opinion? thankyou

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there,
A stone currently the size of 3 cms with a past history of stenting and having a stone of 7 cms is a history that adds up. The stone would have scraped some superficial layers of the urinary tract leading to bleeding. Also due to obstruction there would have been stagnattion of urine leading to urinary tract infection. Renal stones tend to look much worse than they actually are and hence the severe pain, the bleeding and the associated infection. Based on your description even the treatment options explored seem all right. Once the infection recedes than maybe lithotripsy can also be a treatment option.

You are well within your rights to seek a second opinion but I do not think the second doctor would say anything different from what your first one said.

Hope this helps,
