What Causes Blood In Urine While On Eliquis And Xarelto?

I had been diagnosed with AFIB on two occasions and have been advised to take Aliquist and now Xerelto. I used Eliquis at Doctors request but began having blood in my urine. Changed to Xerelto with advice from another doctor, and the same symptoms appeared. I stop taking the pill and the blood clears up quickly and each time I restart taking the blood thinner pill, usually the next day, blood reoccurs within a couple of hours. Where does the blood come from? Is it possible it comes from the badder lining? Could a regime of baby aspirins be as good a thinner?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Both the medications you mention do cause blood thinning and an increased risk for hemorrhage like it has already happened in your case. The bleeding in the urine can be from the urinary bladder or from the kidneys.

Aspirin can be used as an antithrombotic in some patients but is not enough is the patients with AFIB. Patients with AFIB need some anticoagulation as well to prevent clots and reduce risks for major cerebrovascular events.

You will need to explain all these to your doctor, it might be that you might need some dose adjustment or change to another medication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
