What causes blood in stools?

Hi. I recently noticed some blood in my stool. It started yesterday, and I saw it again today. Water turns slighty bright red and there is some blood on the toilet paper. I have never before noticed water turning red before, and it has caused me to worry. There does not seem to be blood in the stool itself, but it is streaked on the stool.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Blood in the stool may be due to hemorrhoid or fissure or fistulas. If you are getting hard stools, it may cause blood in stools. Other possibilities like dysentery or infection may cause a problem. Vascular ectasia or arteriovenous malformation may cause bleeding.

Avoid spicy food and alcohol. Avoid smoking. Eat a high fiber diet, drink plenty of water. Use syrup Cremaffine plus at night. If symptoms not improved, please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
