What Causes Blood In Stool And Abdominal Pain?

I have had a change in bowel motion for at least twelve months now, intermittent signs of blood in stool, abdominal pain needing to empty bowels before pain subdues or passing wind, now am having a dull pulsating type of pain in lower back either side of the spine and feels like soft tissue and not bone.. Have had low iron levels and therefore had two iron infusions. Had endoscopy and colonoscopy, small polyp removed and non cancerous. all checks out o.k. but I am not o.k. Have had early stage breast cancer and radio therapy and am on aromasin now. Have had two dvt and now no longer taking thinners.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

In your case, blood presence in stool doesn’t seem to be something serious. And in most causes of being benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitz baths.

If there are some other symptoms such as weight loss or pain or inability to have bowel movements, then some further tests should be done. It is common that hard stool leads to bleeding due to fragile hemorrhoids so it is important to soften your stool with appropriate diet that include lots of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining.

If there is no improvement in the next few weeks, then tests are required which include colonoscopy and irigography. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy, which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
