What Causes Blood Discharge In The Stools Of A Child?

My 5 year old son had bright red blood in his stool and has been complaining for weeks, every time after he eats, that his stomach hurts. I am very concerned, is this serious? I will have a call in to his pediatrician on Monday. Should I be doing anything else?
