What Causes Bleeding Of Gums In Kids?

Hello my daughter Cadance sutton is 4 years old.. She recently went into Tx childrens hosptal because she had bleeding of her gums small red blood spots and lots of unexpainable bruising. They imediatly did blood work. It came back with a platelet count of 2 and hgb count of 9.8. They diagnost her with ITP. They then gave her an ivig. My daughter then started having a head ache and vomiting. I took her back into er. They said her platelet level was up to 8 and that it might be the ivig that made her ill. Well we went back for our check up a week later Her platlets where down to 2 again and hgbs low as well. They then decided to do a pacu bone marrow asperation. It came back neg for leukemia. Since we have left the hospital again she is on pretnisone and a form of zantac, along with iron. It has been 2 days now.. she recently bumped her head on the door knob... I sent pics to her hemotologist and she said it was swollen and bruised but if she isnt vomiting or complaining she will be fine.. My biggest concern is that I know her platelet count is lower because the red blood dots are increasing and she is covered in bruises. Please help me. Is ITP really this bad.. do you recommend i suggest testing for anything else? I will send you pictures if you give me and email address.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello,

Because of her bleeding tendency, the hematoma (swelling) would have been large even after minor trauma. The basic treatment IVIG has been given, steroids i-e prednisone takes time to respond.

As your doctor said, danger symptoms in head injury are severe headache, vomiting, or altered/loss of consciousness that should be observed for. ITP has 2 forms acute and chronic. This is acute ITP and continue medication till prescribed time, your daughter will hopefully respond. In case not then still other options of treatment for the next level are there.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shehla Usman, Pediatrician
