What Causes Bleeding From Ears?

my daughters boyfriend blew his nose about 4 hours ago, he heard a pop and had intense pain in his left ear. He went to urgent care. They said he had an ear infection and gave him antibiotics and drops to numb it. Once home he put in the drops and about 2 minutes after putting in the ear drops his ear started bleeding. not puss, just red blood. The bleeding has stopped. Should he go to the ER or is it ok to wait until morning? It s 12:30am

Hi,

Noted the history related to the boyfriend of your daughter having had pain in ear after blowing nose, was given antibiotic and drops, started bleeding from left ear, wants to know what to do.
The chronology of events indicate towards the possible cause:
Blowing of the nose pushes air and nasal fluid through Eustichian tune to the middle earof on left side, which turned into infection increasing the edema and fluid. This causes severe pain and daarfness.
This in turn can rupture the ear drum.
This is an obvious injury and thus the ear drum bleeds.
So no need to panic unless the patient is on blood thinners like Aspirin or Clopidogrel or has some bleeding or cclotting disorder.
If the bleeding is not controlled within 7 minutes then he needs to see a Doctor in ER and get investigated for the causes just explained.
The treatment will obviously be as per the findings.
Do not instill anything in ear.
Continue the antibiotic.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
