I took pepto bismol the night before last and I've had two bowel movements that were black. I had a cheeseburger before taking the pepto bismol and some heartburn because of it.I've never had black stool before. I am a 17 year old girl, 5ft. 1in., and 118 lbs.

Hello,

Black stools after pepto bismol is temporary and harmless condition.

Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) may cause black stool in some patients. After taken it combines with sulfur in the colon and forms insoluble black salt - bismuth sulfide. The condition harmless and temporary.

I hope I have answered your question. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
