What Causes Black Stool When On Magnesium Oxide Intake?

My 14 year old son recently started 500g magnesium oxide daily for chronic constipation. His last two stools were the first complete voids he has had in several weeks. My concern is that they were partially black and the toilet water was black. However, there was no odor of GI bleed. This particular magnesium supplement is in the form of a glossy black capsule. General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

Yes, this can be caused by magnesium so you should not be worried. When he stops it,the colour should be back soon. If not then causes may include anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. In this case he should see proctologist.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
