What Causes Black Stool Along With Constipation?

Hi Doctor, I am having black stool (only the first portion - 2 inches). Remaining portion of stool is normal. I went to doctor and he prescribed lactifiber powder which can be mixed in warm water and taken orally at night before bed. So he concludes hard stool will be black. So he has prescribed lactifiber poweder to loosen the stool... Also he says, if it contines, he want to do a colonoscopy. Usually black stool is from small instestine or stomach bleeding right?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
It is suggestive of bleeding in the intestines or stomach.

Bleeding in the stomach or upper portion of your intestines can cause black, tarry stools. Ulcers or gastritis can cause bleeding which mixes with digestive fluids, it takes on the appearance of black colored stool.

Certain medications like iron supplements and bismuth-based drugs can also darken your stools.

So, continue taking the treatment of constipation i.e. Lactofiber powder as advised by your doctor. You may need certain tests such as CBC, ESR, Stool analysis and endoscopic examination of the gut to find out the cause of bleeding following by its treatment accordingly.

Hope this will help.
