What Causes Black Stool After Taking Probiotics?

I started taking probiotics recently and have started having black stool a day after consuming these. Also have been having movements 3 times a day when I was a bit irregular before. I didn t start out with a low dose of probiotics as I thought my body could handle more. Do you think this is due to the cleansing effect of everything in my gut & it may subside? I also am taking an iron supplement but have never had black stool until introducing the probiotics.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is quite common after probiotics and it is due for metabolites excreted in the stool. It will settle once the probiotics have been stopped.

If persists you can consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated to look for possible causes like internal bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
