What Causes Bitter Taste In The Tongue?

I have had a bitter taste on my tongue for about 5 months. My doctor has been working with me using Zantac and Prilosec, but it doesn't help. It seems to come and go as it wants although it's mostly present. It comes usually after eating, but sometimes not; then will develop later on when I haven't eaten anything. I suppose it could be stress related or symptom of menopause (I'm 59), but it just doesn't seem to really be a reflux issue; I have no indigestion. Although taking the Zantac has caused some gas and burping that I never had before. I've changed my diet so many times trying to find the common denominator, but can't find anything that is consistent. Thank you,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for asking!
This bitter taste is a classic presentation of GERD, You need just not prilosec and zantac but a complete diet and lifestyle modifications to help it out.
following will help
Losing weight (if overweight)
Avoiding alcohol, chocolate, citrus juice, and tomato-based products
Avoiding peppermint, coffee, and possibly the onion family
Eating small, frequent meals rather than large meals
Waiting 3 hours after a meal to lie down
Refraining from ingesting food (except liquids) within 3 hours of bedtime
Elevating the head of the bed 8 inches
Avoiding bending or stooping positions
get in touch with gastroenterologist and let them decide what is best for you.
take care
