Hi there,
As a
general surgeon, I often see patients for anal and rectal problems. This could be a number of things. The first could be a
hemorrhoid. A hemorrhoid can feel like a ball, and can be reduced (or pushed back in). Sometimes, they get to the point where they cannot be reduced anymore.
The second possibility is an a pilonidal cyst. This is a cyst (ball of fluid) that tends to occur after shaving. A
perianal abscess is another possibility here. A
fatty tumor (lipoma) is possible, but much less likely.
Without more information, I'd say your description sounds like a hemorrhoid. The good news is that most patients who see me in surgical consultation for hemorrhoids do not actually need surgery. I recommend increasing your fiber intake, your fluid intake, and adding a
stool softener such as miralax or docusate in order to make your stools soft, as straining is what causes hemorrhoids to form in the first place. Often times, by avoiding straining during bowel movements, hemorrhoids will eventually go away. You can also try site baths, which will aid with symptoms of hemorrhoids. If this doesn't resolve or is worsening, I would recommend having your
primary care doctor check it out. If the mass becomes painful, or you have fever, chills, nausea or
vomiting, please seek medical attention immediately. I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
