What Causes Bad Odour During Urination In A Pregnant Woman?

Hi I m 31 weeks pregnant and my urine smells like chicken soup!? About three times now in the past couple of weeks it has smelt like this. I don t have diabetes and last I was checked my blood pressure was normal. I don t have any other symptoms but I have noticed the past week my vision is going blurry!

Thanks for your query.

There may be many causes for foul smelling urine during pregnancy.

1.Uriinary tract infection(UTI) : This is the most common cause. The risk of having a UTI increases manifold during pregnancy. But with UTI , along with bad odour, increased frequency of micturition, burning sensation during micturition is also seen.Fever may also be present. But UTI may be symtomless as well.

2. With pregnancy comes a lot of hormonal changes in the body . Increased Hormone production alond with increased moisture in the vaginal area , are favourable for bacterial and yeast infection which may lead to production of odour.

3.Diabetes may also lead to foul smelling and cloudy urine ( I presume you are not Diabetic)

To rule out Infections , you need to get a routine examination of urine done. Increased pus cells, may indicate UTI.

I would recommend you to get your Blood sugar checked again as you are having Blurred vision. Blood pressure monitoring at intervals is advisable.

Do consult your gnaecologist once again regarding the same.
