What Causes Appearance Of Extra Skin On Eyelids And Their Discoloration?

Hello Doctor, quite a few of my friends here in the Florida Panhandle have extra skin on their eyelids that are not the same color as their skin tone. When asking what causes the extra skin and color change they have been told the cause is too much cholesterol. My question is: Would the body produce this visible sign of too much cholesterol and if so why does this not appear on everyone with high cholesterol? Thank you, Linda C.

Hi, I am Dr.Shreyash Mehta MD Community Medicine.

As you told that few of your friends have extra skin on their eyelids and are of different color from the skin tone.

This occurrence of skin if found only on eyelids is called as Xanthelasma palpebra, a common type of xanthoma that appears on the eyelids and may occur without any underlying medical condition, is not necessarily associated with elevated cholesterol or lipids.
