What Causes An Enlarged Heart?

I have an enlarged heart, Ef 40% and one chamber is dilated. What would have caused this? I have a higher than normal heart rate which varies between 105-130. I have been on metrprolol 25 mgs to help regulate the pulse. I have taken prednisone in the past for an autoimmune disorder with my hands (rash), longest time was 6 weeks, most dosage being for 2 week span each.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The common cause for dilated cardiomyopathy is hypertension. Rule out hypertension by sphygmomanometer instrument. Kindly attach your 2D echocardiography report to guide you further. Valvular cause, viral infections coronary artery problems, thyroid illness etc. are some other causes. I suggest you to consult cardiologist for examination.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
