What Causes An Altered Sense Of Taste?

I have been experiencing a perfumy smell and taste in my mouth. It comes and goes and has been going on for the last 5-6 days. Should I see a doctor? Iam 68 years old, and have gone through the whole menopause conditions. What can I do to get rid of this, it definitely has affected my appetite.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Well if this persists, you should see a doctor rule out some neurologic issues. Common causes for a change of taste are:

1) Vitamin deficiency.
2) Neurological disorders, trauma to the head, surgery of ear.
3) Drugs like ACE Inhibitor ( Zestril ), certain antibiotics.
4) Thyroid disorder, Diabetes.
5) Infection(Glossitis), ageing, kidney, liver diseases, cancer, tobacco use, smoking.
6) loss or decreased sense of smell.

If you could provide me with more details regarding the symptoms you are facing along with your detailed history, It would help me to help you better.

Till then you can take Multivitamins to improve your taste and to avoid the causative factor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
