What Causes Ammonia Smelling Bowel Movements?

Experiencing a sudden change in stool smell today, and it is strong of ammonia. No real consistency changes, and no real changes in a reasonably balanced diet of protein and vegetables, light on fruits. Have never had an issue like this, and I surmise it is food related but wanted to check.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
Ammonia smelling stools can be attributed to bacteria overgrowth or nitrogen being insufficiently digested or improperly metabolized. When food is insufficiently digested, the non-absorbed food can then become food for harmful bacteria, or just putrefy, in the gut.
Some advices that I can give to you are :
-Begin eating healthy foods.
-Avoid spicy foods, fruits, alcohol, and caffeine until 48 hours after all symptoms have disappeared.
-Avoid chewing gum that contains sorbitol.
-Avoid milk for 3 days after symptoms disappear. You can eat cheese or yogurt with probiotics.
-Stay hydrated
-Use probiotics, such as Lactobacillus, are available in either pills or powder. This bacteria occurs naturally in the intestine and may help with digestion
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
