Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Abnormal Sleep Patterns While On Methimazole?
I was currently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My doctor has put me on methimazole, I was wondering how long it would take until I started to feel better and if my erratic sleep pattern could be a possible side effect of the new treatment. I have been on the medicine about a month now
Relief of symptoms depends on the extent of the hyperthyroidism present at the start of methimazole. Patients with severe hyperthyroidism may take months to experience significant symptomatic relief. Patients with milder hyperthyroidism start to feel better in a few weeks. But regular compliance and taking methimazole daily as suggested, is important for achieving good control of hyperthyroidism. For rapid symptom relief, you can use propranolol. But this should be taken under medical supervision. Abnormal sleep pattern is part of disease. When serum T4 level will return to normal, your sleep pattern returns to normal which will take time. Advice 1. Continue methimazole as prescribed 2. Consult your doctor for possible use of propranolol for rapid relief of symptoms 3. Investigation – serum TSH & T4 I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question Thank
