What Causes Abnormal Menstrual Bleeding Post Intake Of Birth Control Pills?

A little over a week into my pack of birth controll pills I started bleeding again (after 2 and a half day period earlier) and it was pretty darn painful the first few days. It s been 13 days and the pain has lightened up to some discomfort and the bleeding is lighter but still more than spotting...I did miss one pill but I ve done that before with no problem. So I am terribly confused and wondering when this is going to end :( I would love any insight anyone has to offer. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

At times a missed pill does not really cause a presentation, but at times a missed pill can immediately trigger a response to initiate a withdrawal bleed. This is what you are experiencing. What you would normally experience at the end of the pack, you are experiencing now. I think you should discontinue the pills until your bleeding stops and then start a new pack afresh. But please do so only after consulting your primary doctor and also use an alternate mode of contraception until all returns to normal.

Best wishes
