What Causes Abdominal Pain, Diarrhea, Bloating And Constipation?

Hello, my daughter (age 13), has been complaining of abdominal pain since about 4 days ago. She had diarrhea, bloating, and she is now constipated. The pain varies for her, at times it is at about a 5 on her pain scale, currently she says about a 2. It not so severe that she cries, but she s very uncomfortable. Other than her asthma (which is well-controlled), she is in excellent health. She weighs about 100 pounds, is a gymnast and just a normal teen otherwise! Any ideas on what may be causing her discomfort? She started menstruating about a year ago, and then did not have her period after that except once. Perhaps she is having pre-menstrual cramps?? For 4 days though?? She researched this and thinks she may be lactose intolerant. I don t know much about that condition, as nobody in our family has ever been diagnosed with it. Thanks for your help! Cindy Z.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
Your daughter has the symptoms for a few days and in this case the first cause of diarrhea, tummy ache can easily be a vital infection. Because her pain is not on the higher scale we can watch her for 2-3 more days. Her pain seems to be improving as it was 5 and now is 2.
What I would recommend is:
1- Paracetamol for pain
2- Local warm abdominal compresses to help with pain
3- Drink plenty small amount of fluids and eat small amounts if fluid
4- avoiding mild would be a good idea for the coming week, even viral infection may make us prone to lactulose intolerance
5- avoid spicy, fatty, fried heavy food
6- take probiotics
7- if pain is not improving in 2-3 days than your daughter needs to see a doctor. other causes will have to be considered like parasite infection and lactulose intolerance, irritable bowel ect

Hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you
