What Causes Abdominal Discomfort, Nausea, Vomiting And Shoulder Pain After Eating Food?

Trying to find answers for my 92 year old mother who is basically healthy on paper, labs are always great, she does have HTN, a hiatal hernia, diverticulitis and Afib. Every time she eats she gets abdominal discomfort, nausea, some vomiting and severe left shoulder pain and until she burps she is in severe distress. Is this an abdominal problem or her heart? I m at a loss and so are her physicians. It happens every time she eats so consequently she is losing weight because she tries not to eat because everything she eats hurts her so bad.

Hello,

Thanks for your query on HCM

"As"per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this -

1)Do a clinical examination by your treating Doctor [Gastro]and do few investigations like [endoscopy, stool exam and USG whole abdomen] to confirm diagnosis.

2)If confirmed then discuss with your Doctor about a course of prescribed medications like [clarithromycin, metronidazole and pantoprazole]

Do follow lifestyle modifications like this -

1)Try to avoid red meat, red peppers, sour food, pickles, tea and coffee, sweets and aerated drinks as they may irritate the stomach lining. Avoid dairy products until the digestive system is healed.

2)Try to eat your dinner at least 2 hours before going to bed.

3)Eat slowly and make sure to chew thoroughly to facilitate proper digestion. Eat small meals at regular intervals to help reduce any excessive acid buildup in the stomach.

4)Try to avoid drinking water with meals as this can delay digestion and
drink an ample amount of water throughout the day.

5)Do take a multivitamin caps regularly.

6)Try to maintain a food diary to find out what triggers problems and try to eliminate those foods from your diet.

7)Try to avoid smoking as well as eliminate alcohol intake.

8)Try to reduce stress through meditation.

9)If you are taking any medicines, consult your doctor as certain medications can aggravate your stomach problem.

Regarding left shoulder pain do a physical examination by your Doctor [Cardiologist] and do ECG and coronary angiogram to confirm it and take prescribed medications as per your treating Doctor's advice.

Hope that helps
