What Causes Abdominal Cramps During Medication For Yeast Infection?

Last evening I used a Miconazole OTC cream to treat for a yeast infection. I am having severe lower abdominal cramps, slight hives, and itching of the palms. I have gotten no respite from the severe lower abdominal cramps that have lasted about 12 hours now. I have used similar OTC medications like this in the pasted and always experienced a slight about of discharge of the medication the following day. I have not experienced that this time, but do have the symptoms I outlined above. Please advise.

Hello,

I understand your concern. It is clear you are allergic to Miconazole OTC and most probably to all the 'azole antifungals. So I recommend you stop using it altogether. Neosporin AF OTC is a good alternative, which is highly unlikely to provoke the reaction you get with Miconazole.

Also, measures such as cleaning and thoroughly drying your intimate areas after each bathroom trip, and wearing exclusively cotton undies, are essential in not only eradicating thrush, but also preventing recurrence. It must be noted that certain drugs such as antibiotics, stress and weakening of the immune system are also major causes or recurring yeast infections. So taking care of these aspects are also very important measures in eradication of thrush.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

All the best,
Dr. Ornela Ademovi
