What Causes A Sore Throat And Fever?

I ve had a sore throat for three weeks and have already been on antibiotics. I now have a cough, low grade fever, sore throat, and body ahes. I had a blood test Friday. Strep was ruled out and the mono spot test came back negative. I am still feeling pretty bad - fever comes and goes. Canyou tell me what else could be causing the symptoms?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is suggestive of viral infection.

In addition to infectious mononucleosis there are other viruses (like influenza) and atypical bacteria are responsible for the sore throat. I suggest the following:
* Consider taking over-the-counter medication such as paracetamol
* Throat lozenges for soothening effect on throat
* Drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
* Doing frequent warm salt/saline water
* Using a humidifier.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
